Now Hiring: Excavator / Forestry Mulcher Operator
Yellowstone Land Management is looking for an experienced Excavator / Forestry Mulcher Operator to join our team for the 2026 season.
Position Details:
· Full-time seasonal work, with work expected through approximately November 2026, subject to weather, workload, and project schedule
· Work based out of Montana, with travel within the state and possible travel to neighboring states depending on job location
· Access to company truck and tools while working
· Lodging or camper may be provided when overnight travel is required
· Start date to be determined based on project schedule and applicant availability
Primary Duties:
· Operate forestry mulcher/excavator for land management, fuels reduction, wildfire mitigation, and habitat improvement projects
· Perform daily equipment inspections, greasing, cleaning, and basic maintenance as needed
· Monitor equipment performance and report mechanical issues promptly
· Work safely around trees, brush, uneven terrain, fences, livestock areas, and rural properties
· Assist with occasional chainsaw work, hand clearing, fence line cleanup, or other ground support tasks as needed
· Follow project maps, job specifications, safety instructions, and landowner/property requirements
· Maintain basic daily logs, production notes, and job documentation as requested
Minimum Requirements:
· Minimum of 1,000 hours operating an excavator
· Experience with forestry work is a strong plus
· Valid driver’s license required with acceptable driving record
· Must be dependable, safety-minded, and able to work independently
· Willingness to travel and stay out of town when needed
· Ability to understand safety instructions, follow job specifications, and complete basic daily logs or paperwork
· Basic mechanical aptitude and willingness to perform daily equipment checks and light maintenance
· Willingness to assist with occasional chainsaw work, hand work, and ground support duties when needed
· Physical ability to lift and carry tools, climb in and out of equipment, hike/walk to machines and trucks, and work outdoors on uneven terrain and in variable weather conditions
Preferred Experience:
· Forestry mulching
· Land clearing, fuels reduction, and wildfire mitigation work
· Excavator mulching, skid steer mulching, or related heavy equipment operation
· Equipment maintenance, troubleshooting, and daily machine inspections
· Working around ranch, range, timber, or rural properties
· GPS, mapping, or job tracking experience is a plus
Education:
High school diploma or GED preferred, but not required. Equivalent hands-on equipment operating experience will be considered.
Pay: $32–$42/hour DOE.

F.H. Stoltze Land & Lumber Company is seeking an experienced and certified Log Scaler to join our resource team in Columbia Falls, MT. Stoltze is the oldest family-owned sawmill and forest management company in Montana.
Stoltze is dedicated to active stewardship of our forest resources and production of high quality wood products. The Log Scaler position is a full-time hourly position. Stoltze offers a competitive compensation and benefits package with a probationary wage starting at $27.17/hour with additional benefits including accrued vacation, 401k match, holiday pay, and highly competitive insurance plans.
Position Description:
As a Log Scaler for Stoltze you will be tasked with scaling logs from various entities helping quantify species and volume for the sawmill as well as quality control for log purchases. Additionally, you will be helping our resource team maximize production, efficiency, and safety in log handling, and storage, while supplying the mill with adequate material to meet its fiber demands.
Responsibilities will include scaling logs, equipment operation and maintenance, maintenance of log yard, storage and handling of sawlogs, maintaining fiber supply and flow to sawmill, and constant communication with mill-site supervisors.
You will be required to work closely with other resource department personnel, plant supervisors, and private contractors. This position reports to the Log Yard Lead and Resource Manager.
Education and Experience:
Must have a valid Montana Driver’s License. A High School Diploma or GED is preferred. Scaling experience is preferred. Preference will be given to those individuals with five years or greater of log yard management and equipment operation experience. Strong communication and interpersonal skills required.
