The Montana Logging Association is in the process of establishing
a collection of Montana's native trees and shrubs. We hope this collection will
serve as an educational tool so that Montanan's and visitors can learn more
about our trees and shrubs and their values for our wildlife, environment and
society. The arboretum is located at our headquarters building on Highway 35,
Kalispell, just east of the Flathead River.
Most of the trees and shrubs were planted during the spring of 1999. The formal arboretum site occupies just a little over one acre, with each tree species planted in groups of three arranged in a triangular configuration. The shrubs are planted in a shrub garden at the north end of the arboretum. As the arboretum matures, it will provide an attractive and educational compliment at our headquarters site.
We have many more native trees and shrubs planted on another six acres around the 13-acre site, where we intend to restore a native forest similar to those that occupied the Flathead Valley several centuries ago. It is our intent that the arboretum will provide a unique learning environment for area schools and others interested in the development of plants and forests.
